Gresford Athletic battled well, but were defeated by Flint Town United away in the second round of the 2024/25 JD Welsh Cup on Friday night.
The cup tie began in the best possible way for Gresford Athletic, with Charley Edge putting a lovely ball into the box to find Charlie Mann, who fires it home to take the lead just two minutes into the game.
After an excellent start, The Colliers continued to defend superbly well as Flint Town United attempted to find an equaliser, with Lewis Dutton making an excellent save in the seventh minute to deny a header from The Silkmen.
Then, Charley Edge put in a great corner, finding Dave Forbes, but his header went over the crossbar in the ninth minute.
Play stopped in the 19th minute for a total of six minutes as Dave Forbes recieved treatment for a cut forehead after colliding with Flint Town United's Izaack Lambert, in which the forward returned to the pitch to play with a bandage.
In the 39th minute, Lewis Dutton was called upon again, making another great save to retain the lead as The Colliers looked to hold on until half time.
Simon Smith attempted a long-range effort in the 40th minute, but it was met with a good save by Jack Flint in the Flint Town United net.
The half time whistle sounded with Gresford Athletic 1-0 up on the scoreline following the early opener and a desire to continue an excellent first half showing in the remaining 45 minutes.
Charley Edge grabbed the first chance of the second half, firing a free-kick towards goal, but only to be met with another save by Flint Town United's Jack Flint in the 49th minute.
Then, Flint Town United stun Gresford Athletic with a goal in the 50th minute, as Josh Jones grabbing the equaliser for The Silkmen.
Things continued to fall against The Colliers, as Harley Peagram blasted the ball towards the net, taking a big deflection and crossing the goalline to give Flint Town United the lead.
Substitute Ilan ap Gareth striked the ball with power, aiming for the goal, but it was met with a good block in the 66th minute.
Flint Town United were clinical, as they added a third goal with 73 minutes on the clock, with Ben Wynne driving the ball into the bottom corner of the net.
Then, The Silkmen made it four, showing their JD Cymru Premier quality with a tidy finish from Florian Yonsian following a superbly pinged ball from Jack Flint in the 79th minute.
Josh Jones grabbed his second goal of the game in the 86th minute with an excellent strike, finishing the game and cementing progression into round three of the 2024/25 JD Welsh Cup for Flint Town United.
Gresford Athletic battled well, particuarly in the first half, and can be proud of their efforts against top-level opposition, but will now focus on the priority of picking up some momentum and points in the JD Cymru North.
