Gresford Athletic suffer a big defeat against Colwyn Bay at home

Gresford Athletic suffered a big defeat when they faced title-chasers Colwyn Bay at home on matchday 10 of the 2024/25 JD Cymru North on Saturday.

The game was Gresford Athletic's dedicated fixture to commemorate the 'FAW Fair Play' campaign, with the starting XI posing for a team photo with an 'FAW Fair Play' pennant ahead of kick off to encourage mutual respect, on and off the pitch, for all of the Welsh Football Family.

The opening 20 minutes or so of the game began quite evenly, with neither side managing to find any real clear-cut chances, but it was in the 28th minute when Colwyn Bay started to turn the screw, forcing a good save from Lewis Dutton from a free-kick.

Then, in the 29th minute, Josh Watkin did superbly to clear the ball off the line to deny an almost certain opener for The Bay.

However, it wasn't long before Colwyn Bay opened the scoring, as a corner was whipped into the box in the 32nd minute, finding Sol Forde to put the ball away.

Colwyn Bay then made it two in the 36th minute, with Joshua Carey keeping hold of the ball up the pitch, beating the Gresford Athletic defence and finishing the ball into the net with ease.

The half time whistle blew, with Gresford Athletic managing to compete decently well for 20 minutes in the first half, before Colwyn Bay showed their quality with two quick goals.

The second half showed Colwyn Bay in control, dominating possession and proving their quality for much of the 45 minutes.

The Bay's dominance was proved when Wiliam McKinley's effort hit the post and Dan Atkins was in the right place in the right time to put the ball into the net in the 63rd minute.

Paul Johnson then brought down substitute Gwion Dafydd in the box, with the number nine slotting the penalty into the bottom corner in the 64th minute to give Colwyn Bay a four-goal advantage.

Then, to add the cherry on top for The Bay, Gwion Dafydd found his second goal of the game, curling the ball into the far corner to make it 5-0 in added time.

Gresford Athletic will take the result on the chin against a fantastic side and continue to look to finally gain some momentum for the 2024/25 season in the upcoming string of league games.
