We are delighted to announce that Gresford Athletic have today completed the signing of James Smith from Penycae.
This is the 10th signing that Gresford Athletic have made during the 2022/23 summer transfer window.
The defender actually began his career at Gresford Athletic, playing for the club between 2014 and 2016, before signing for 14-time JD Cymru Premier Champions The New Saints in the 2016/17 summer transfer window.
Two seasons at The New Saints were followed by a move to Connah's Quay Nomads, playing for their Reserves team from 2019 until 2021.
The 19-year-old then signed for Llandudno, progressing into First Team football for the 2021/22 season before transferring to Penycae in June 2022.
James made seven appearances in all competitions for Llandudno during the 2021/22 season, with the club finishing in second place of the 2021/22 JD Cymru North. He has also already made five appearances in all competitions for Penycae during the 2022/23 season.
Gresford Athletic First Team Manager Eddie Maurice-Jones says that James fits the model of player that he wants at the club:
"It is brilliant news to secure the signature of James Smith from Penycae.
James is a local lad who we have come to know from his time at Llandudno. He performed really well in a 1-0 defeat last season and when either myself or Jonathan Hill-Dunt have watched, he is always a talking point after the game.
James is a right-sided centre back, who is comfortable on the ball, has a good passing range and a great understanding for the game.
James fits the model of player we want at Gresford Athletic and I am confident he will be a great success."
Welcome to Gresford Athletic, James!
